Family Sign Language Weekends

Our next Family Sign Language Weekend is on 12-13 January 2019, at Exeter Deaf Academy.

Since 2014, Exeter Deaf Academy has offered free Family Sign Language Weekends for families, friends and professionals that may know or work with a Deaf child.

Our qualified and experienced Deaf Academy staff deliver the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) accredited Family Sign Language workshop in an inclusive and friendly environment. Our informal workshop is split over two days. Lunch is included and there is also accommodation available for families travelling from far away.

These weekend sessions are fantastic for families, friends and professionals to learn basic sign language, get tips and build their signing vocabulary to help support a Deaf child’s development within the home. We aim to make it as fun as possible. There aren’t any exams or assessments and you can learn at your own pace.

Each day begins at 10am and finishes at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. There is free parking at the Academy. Accommodation places are limited and offered on a first come basis.

Our Family Sign Language sessions are led by Academy BSL Instructor Nikki James, in partnership with our Complex Learning Lead Karma Stocks. Nikki is a native BSL user, and delivers a fun and engaging weekend, which consistently receives positive reviews from all of our attendees.

"The weekend was informal and relaxed, and very informative. We covered lots of signs and some Deaf culture. All the family really enjoyed it, and I would absolutely recommend it."  Emma, January 2018 attendee.
