Actual Starting Salary: £16,866.30 based on a full time equivalent of £21,372.00

Exeter Deaf Academy ("the Academy") is a charity that provides esssential specialist education and residential care to Deaf young people. We are at an exciting time in our history as we build a brand new world-class Deaf Academy in Exmouth, due to open in April 2020. This facility will help our amazing Deaf students thrive. It will break down barriers to Deaf young people, bring commjnities together and enable families to thrive.

The Academy provides nuturing education and care tailored to the individual needs of Deaf young people. The sense of belonging to an inspiring bilingual community transforms students as they develop language skills and journey towards independence and fulfilling their own potential. 

We are seeking a SEND/Autism lead practitioner to join our dynamic teaching and support team. This leadrole will model best practice in working with our SEND learners and support our wider capacity building as a team to achieve succesful outcomes for our young people. They will be working across both school, college and care environments, implementing learning and behaviour strategies for our SEND students, including responsibility for in house training and guidance to share strategies with Academy staff. In addition, they will take a lead in role in supporting our work with our students who are autistic.

The role will involve working in collaboration with the Class Teacher, wider support team and Care staff to meet the needs of our students. The job requires specialist support and/or interventions with children and young people who may have additional learning and/or physical disabilities, addressing the needs of students who need particular help to overcome barriers to learning and behaviour. To occasionally supervise whole classes during the short term absence of teachers. To assist the Classroom Teacher in planning, monitoring, assessment and effective teaching and learning in all SEND students.

Key Requirements: 

  • Experience of working within a SEND educational setting and subsequent learning strategies.
  • Experience dealing with challenging behaviour and willingness to work with students who demonstrate challenging behaviour.
  • Working knowledge of SEND young people in an educational setting.
  • Willingness to supervise small teams of staff during cover supervision.
  • Understanding of principles of Child Development and learning processes and, in particular, barriers to learning.
